Memorial Day has come and gone. Labor Day is on its way. But let’s be honest—we all know that’s not the next holiday filling store shelves.
Summerween is creeping in, and I am here for it.
I’ve already spotted Halloween displays starting to appear, and every year I get ridiculously excited. While some people are soaking up sunshine and beach days, I’m over here wondering if it’s too early to rewatch horror movies and start decorating with pumpkins.
(It’s not.)
So in the spirit of Summerween, I thought I’d share my current Top 5 Halloween movies.
1. Thirteen Ghosts
This will always be my number one.
Not only is it one of my favorite horror movies of all time, but it’s also where I developed my completely rational and absolutely understandable crush on Matthew Lillard.
The ghosts were terrifying, the concept was unique, and that glass house remains one of the coolest horror settings I’ve ever seen. No matter how many times I watch it, it never loses its magic.
2. Trick ‘r Treat
This has become a household staple.
Honestly, it’s one of the most fun Halloween movies I’ve ever watched. It captures everything I love about the season: costumes, creepy stories, dark humor, and just enough horror to keep things interesting.
If I’m making a Halloween watch list, Trick ‘r Treat is always on it.
3. House on Haunted Hill
This movie left a permanent mark on my brain.
To this day, every time I hear “Kryptonite” by 3 Doors Down, I think about it.
My parents watched it. My friends’ parents watched it. My siblings watched it. It feels like one of those movies that quietly became part of my childhood and never left. Every rewatch feels like revisiting an old nightmare.
4. House of Wax
This one represents a milestone for me.
I think it was the first horror movie I saw without my parents and with friends instead. Considering I was an absolute chicken when I was younger, that was a pretty big deal.
And honestly, can you blame me?
Jason Voorhees once tripped over my dad’s giant boots during a haunted hayride and fell directly into my back while holding a chainsaw.
I was both terrified and completely in awe.
Thankfully, this was well after they started removing the chain from the saw. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t be writing this blog post.
The actor even apologized afterward, which somehow made the entire experience even more memorable.
5. Silent Hill
Silent Hill has held a spot in my heart for years.
As a kid, Pyramid Head represented pure fear and terror.
As an adult…
Well.
Let’s just say my feelings have evolved.
Hello, Pyramid Daddy.
I’m kidding.
Maybe.
You’ll never know.
Beyond my questionable attraction to giant monsters, Silent Hill is genuinely one of the most atmospheric horror movies I’ve ever watched. The fog, the music, the creatures, the sense of dread—it all works for me.
Honorable Mentions
While my Top 5 are special for personal reasons, there are plenty of horror classics and favorites that deserve recognition.
I love IT, Scream, and Halloween. They may not have cracked my personal Top 5, but they rank incredibly high on my overall horror list.
I’m also a huge fan of the Final Destination franchise, which somehow managed to validate every irrational fear I’ve ever had while simultaneously creating brand-new ones.
One word:
Log truck.
If you know, you know.
Then there are the movies I grew up with.
Orphan absolutely fascinated me as a teenager. I remember immediately running to Google to look up the “true story” behind it.
The Omen remains iconic.
The Exorcist gave me a lifelong reference for projectile vomiting that I still use far more often than I probably should.
And Poltergeist? That was my mom’s movie. I remember watching it over and over again and becoming increasingly terrified of static-filled televisions.
Of course, I can’t forget The Craft because, let’s face it:
“We are the weirdos, mister.”
I even included Donnie Darko on my list. It left a lasting impression on me, even if it doesn’t quite make my Top 5.
Jennifer’s Body made the cut too. Is it scary? Not really. Did I love it anyway? Absolutely.
A Little Rob Zombie Appreciation
No Summerween list from me would be complete without showing some love to Rob Zombie.
House of 1000 Corpses, 31, and 3 From Hell all earned spots on my list.
They’re chaotic, brutal, weird, and completely unforgettable.
Exactly how I like my horror.
Horror Mom Life
Because I have two boys, there are also a few kid-friendly horror entries mixed into my collection.
If you know me, you know my youngest shares my love of horror.
I’ve spent years debating how much horror is too much horror, but right now we’re firmly stuck in a Five Nights at Freddy’s phase. That’s currently his favorite, followed by IT, Tarot, and Halloween.
Watching him discover the same genre I’ve loved for most of my life is both exciting and mildly concerning.
Mostly exciting.
And Finally…
Yes, I included Hocus Pocus.
Because it’s Summerween.
Because I love the Sanderson sisters.
And because no Halloween season feels complete without it.
Now tell me:
What are your Top 5 Halloween movies?
And more importantly…
